SAFETY TIPS FOR CHANGING A FLAT TIRE

Towing Company Indianapolis offers a tire changing service. However, if you’re going to change a tire yourself, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind. There are certain items you should have on hand if you ever have to change a tire. Here are some handy items that do not come with the car, but are very helpful to have in case you need to change a tire:

  • Flashlight with batteries.
  • Rain gear for the driver and passenger.
  • Small cut of two” x 6″ wood to support the jack.
  • First Aid Kit in the event of small cuts
  • Flashing lights.

LED FLASHLIGHT

Experiencing a flat tire can happen at any time, so having a few basic items on hand will make things easier. Although a cell phone camera light can be helpful, having a higher powered LED flashlight is much better. You’ll need the extra light especially at night.

EMERGENCY FLASHING FLARES

Always be 100% aware of your surrounding as motorist may not slow down when you’re on the side of the road. There are various kits that you can purchase where a set of emergency electronic flashing flares are included ranging from $20 to $40 and up. You can place these flashing flares in the front and rear of your vehicle while changing a tire.

RAIN JACKET

Having a roadside assistance kit is a great investment. When you experience a flat tire during heavy rain, you’re going to want adequate rain protection. Having at least 2 larger rain jackets in the truck or rear storage area is highly recommended.

SPARE TIRE IN GREAT SHAPE

Make sure your spare tire is the correct spare for your car. If in doubt, call a local tire repair shop and ask what tire is the right one for your vehicle make, model, and year. Check the car’s owner’s manual for proper tire sizes, maintenance, and tire maintenance procedures. Remember, a spare tire is a temporary solution. They are not meant to be used for extended periods of time. Most repair shops recommend that you only use one to get to the nearest tire repair shop.

HAVING A HELPING HAND

It is a good idea to have someone with you who is familiar with cars to assist you. Even though it is not necessary, it will make the process much easier having an extra hand. You can call JR’s Services and Recovery to help with roadside assistance, if you don’t have the necessary help to self-service a flat tire. It’s better to have an experienced professional on site rather than trying to attempt it yourself if you aren’t familiar with the process.

MOBILE FIRST AID KIT

Always put on the required safety gloves and eye protection before changing a tire. Another highly recommended item to have in a vehicle is a first aid kit. In the event of a cut, having the right items to clean the wound and dress will help prevent an infection.

JR’s Services & Recovery offers flat tire roadside assistance. You will need to have your own spare tire however. If you do not have a spare tire, we can tow your vehicle to the nearest tire shop. Call 317-629-5646
